(See competition rules below)

General Competition Guidelines: For each Competition, a member may enter up to three prints and up to three digitally projected images.  If a member opts to enter three projected images then one image must be marked as a reserve (R) in the file name.

The number of entries / member will be controlled so that the total entry to a competition does not exceed 100 (or the maximum number permitted by the judge), firstly by removing the Reserve DPI entries from members with 3 print entries.  Then, if necessary, further DPIs will be removed from entrants with prints so that the number of entries / member does not exceed 3 before other Reserve DPIs are removed.

All entries must be the result of original images taken by the member.  Digitally manipulated and produced images are acceptable as recognised by the PAGB.

Open Guidelines: Anything goes, and please feel free to submit prints, any size, however please ensure your mount is 50 x 40 cm to prevent damage to your print.

Mono Guidelines: An image is considered to be Monochrome only if it gives the impression of having no colour (i.e. contains only shades of grey which can include pure black and pure white) OR it gives the impression of being a greyscale image that has been toned in one colour across the entire image. (For example by Sepia, red, gold, etc.) A grey-scale or multi-coloured image modified or giving the impression of having been modified by partial toning, multi-toning or by the inclusion of spot colouring does not meet the definition of monochrome and shall be classified as a Colour Work. Contrast is also important.

Panel Guidelines: The Panel competition is “Open”, i.e. the subject matter is up to you.

A Panel consists of three images which work together to form a cohesive series, either by theme, pattern, colour or any other thesis, so that the whole becomes more than the sum of its parts, i.e. the whole thing works together well. The 3 images can be mounted together or separately, (in which case please note the order you wish the images to be displayed). There is no restriction upon the image or mount sizes other than a minimum image size of 7” x 5”

Nature Cup Guidelines:Nature photography is restricted to the use of the photographic process to depict all branches of natural history, except anthropology and archaeology, in such a fashion that a well-informed person will be able to identify the subject material and certify its honest presentation. The story telling value of a photograph must be weighed more than the pictorial quality while maintaining high technical quality. Human elements shall not be present, except where those human elements are integral parts of the nature story such as nature subjects, like barn owls or storks, adapted to an environment modified by humans, or where those human elements are in situations depicting natural forces, like hurricanes or tidal waves. Scientific bands, scientific tags or radio collars on wild animals are permissible. Photographs of human created hybrid plants, cultivated plants, feral animals, domestic animals, or mounted specimens are ineligible, as is any form of manipulation that alters the truth of the photographic statement.

No techniques that add, relocate, replace, or remove pictorial elements except by cropping are permitted. Techniques that enhance the presentation of the photograph without changing the nature story or the pictorial content, or without altering the content of the original scene, are permitted including HDR, focus stacking and dodging / burning. Techniques that remove elements added by the camera, such as dust spots, digital noise, and film scratches, are allowed. Stitched images are not permitted. All allowed adjustments must appear natural. Colour images can be converted to grey-scale monochrome. Infra-red images, either direct-captures or derivations, are not allowed.

Images entered in Nature sections meeting the Nature Photography Definition above can have landscapes, geologic formations, weather phenomena, and extant organisms as the primary subject matter. This includes images taken with the subjects in controlled conditions, such as zoos, game farms, botanical gardens, aquariums and any enclosure where the subjects are totally dependent on man for food.

Club Competition Rules (updated September 2016)

In both the print and projected image sections, there will be a further division into ‘General (No or Limited Experience)’, Intermediate (some experience) and ‘Advanced (Experienced)’ Sections.  The decision which section a member should enter  will be determined between member and Competition Secretaries, on which the decision of the latter is final and will form a prefix to the Membership Number.

Images entered into the ‘monochrome’ competition must not contain more than one ‘colour’ although images toned with a single colour will be acceptable e.g. Sepia toned, Cyanotype.

  1. Print entries must bear the title of the competition, the title of the image and entrant's membership number including the section prefix (‘G’, ‘I’ or ‘A’) on the back.
Digital Projected Images should be entered on a CD/memory stick with identification on it, as a JPEG not exceeding 1600 pixels wide for lanscape orientated images and 1200 pixels for portrait orientated images (click HERE for guidance on resizing).
The file name should include only the Title-MembershipNo.jpg and (R) if appropriate see Eg. For a member in the ‘General (No or Limited Experience)’ Section

           Man-G27.jpg
           Trouble and Strife-G27 (R).jpg

  2. All entries are to be handed to the Competition Secretary by the specified hand-in dates.  From this point the Competition Secretary is responsible for all entries. Members must only reclaim entries from the Competition Secretary.

  3. For each Competition, a member may enter up to three prints and up to three digitally projected imagesIf a member opts to enter three projected images then one image must be  marked as a reserve (R) in the file name.
The number of entries/member will be controlled so that the total entry to a competition does not exceed 100 (or the maximum number permitted by the judge), firstly by removing the Reserve DPI entries from members with 3 print entries.  Then, if necessary, further DPIs will be removed from entrants with prints so that the number of entries/member does not exceed 3 before other Reserve DPIs are removed.

  4.  All entries must be the result of original images taken by the member.

  5.  Digitally manipulated and produced images are acceptable as recognised by the PAGB.

  6. Each print must have one side of at least 7½” (19 cm) excluding  the mount which should not exceed 50×40 cm.

  7. Any image which is not placed or given a commendation by the judge may be resubmitted for another competition provided the subject matter matches the competition title.  Placed or commended images cannot be entered into any other club competition and must not be altered for the print & PDI of the year competition.

  8.  Copies of images that have been placed – 1st, 2nd, 3rd, Highly Commended & Commended will be put on the Website. The authors of placed prints should let the Competition Secretary have a digital file by E-mail of that image of a suitable size – 1400×1050 pixels as a jpeg – by Friday following the judging. If sending the files by E-mail is not possible, entrants should bring copies of the digital file on a CD or memory stick to the judging so that it can by copied by the Competition Secretary after the judging should it be placed.  If the authors do not want their images put onto the Website, they should inform the Competition Secretaries that this is the case on the night of the competition.

  9. Interclub Battles:  Entries for Interclub Battles are usually chosen from the winning club competition prints and PDIs. Further entries may be handed to (or requested by) the Competition Secretaries in accordance with rules 1. and 6 for possible selection.  A selection committee, which will generally consist of three members, will be responsible for deciding which entries will represent the Club in the battle.

Print Panel Competition (not appliable for the 2021/22 Club year)

  • The Panel Competition is an annual competition. It’s intention to allow members to have a long term project that they can work on during the 2016/17 year.
  • Theme - TBC. The aim is to get three photographs that work together well. Maybe to show as visual art or perhaps to convey a story. Three random photographs, that may be excellent individually, shown together is not likely to succeed.
  • Size - the maximum size of the print is A4. Square format photographs may be submitted with the maximum size being
210mm x 210mm. The minimum size is 100mm on the shortest side for all formats
  • Mounts - these can be any size. Three prints mounted in one mount is acceptable
  • Layout - the layout can be varied e.g.  2 x 1 or 3 in a row (horizontally or vertically) or 1 above & 2 below.
  • Prizes - there will be two prizes, one for the General category and one for the Advanced category - i.e. in line with the other club competitions. The competition will be judged by Richard Jones.

We are sure that you will find this project very rewarding and challenging and we look forward to receiving lots of entries.

To remind you, this competition is for 3 prints up to A4 (the mount can be larger) which will be judged as a panel of three rather than as individual images.
